2. Exam Pattern
The Assistant Loco Pilot exam is conducted in three major stages. You must pass one stage to go to the next stage.
Stage 1: CBT 1 (Screening Test) This is an online test with 75 multiple-choice questions. You get exactly 60 minutes to solve the paper. This test is only used to filter out weak students. The marks you get here are not added to your final merit list.
Stage 2: CBT 2 (Main Exam) If you pass CBT 1, you will sit for CBT 2. This exam happens in a single day but is divided into two parts.
- Part A: This part decides your final merit list. It has 100 questions from Maths, Reasoning, and Basic Science & Engineering. You get 90 minutes to solve it.
- Part B: This is your Trade Test. It has 75 questions from your ITI trade, and you get 60 minutes. You only need to score a flat 35% marks to pass this part. If you fail Part B, the railway board will not check your Part A marks.
Stage 3: CBAT (Psycho Test) If you pass CBT 2, you go for the Computer Based Aptitude Test. Here, you have to pass 5 different game-like tests on a computer to prove your concentration, depth perception, and memory.
Note: There is a negative marking of 1/3 mark for every wrong answer in CBT 1 and CBT 2. There is no negative marking in the CBAT Psycho Test.

3. Eligibility
To apply for the Assistant Loco Pilot job, a simple 12th pass certificate is not allowed. You must have a proper technical background.
Educational Qualification: You must have a 10th pass certificate (Matriculation) along with an ITI certificate from NCVT or SCVT. The accepted ITI trades include Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Turner, Machinist, and Refrigeration & AC Mechanic. If you do not have an ITI, you can still apply if you have a 3-year Engineering Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile branches. B.Tech or B.E. degree holders in these exact same branches are also fully allowed to apply. However, Civil Engineering and Computer Science students cannot apply for this post.
Age Limit: The normal age limit is 18 to 30 years. But recently, the railway board gave a special 3-year age relaxation. So, the current age limit for general category students is 18 to 33 years. OBC students get an extra 3 years, and SC/ST students get an extra 5 years of relaxation.
Medical Standards: This job has the strictest medical rules in the entire railway. You must pass the A1 medical standard. Your distant vision must be exactly 6/6 in both eyes without wearing glasses. If you have color blindness, night blindness, or if you ever had LASIK laser eye surgery, you will be permanently rejected.
4. Salary
The salary of an Assistant Loco Pilot is the biggest reason why millions of students apply for this job. The post comes under Pay Level 2 of the 7th Pay Commission. Your starting Basic Pay is Rs. 19,900 per month.
However, the real money in the ALP salary comes from a special benefit called the ‘Running Allowance’. The railway pays you extra money for every single kilometer you drive the train. Currently, the rate is around Rs. 430 for every 100 kilometers you travel. Since a train covers hundreds of kilometers in one single duty, this allowance alone adds Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000 to your monthly pay slip.
On top of the basic pay and running allowance, you get the Dearness Allowance (DA), which was recently increased to 60% of your basic pay in April 2026. You also receive a House Rent Allowance (HRA) depending on your city, a Transport Allowance, and a Night Duty Allowance because you will drive trains late at night.
When you add all these benefits together, the starting in-hand salary of a brand new Assistant Loco Pilot easily reaches Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000 per month. During very busy months, the gross salary can easily touch Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 45,000 per month.
5. Selection Process
The railway board follows a very strict five-step process to select the best Assistant Loco Pilots. You have to pass each step to reach the next one.
- Step 1: First Stage CBT (CBT 1): This is a 60-minute online exam with basic questions. The board uses this step just to remove the students who have not studied well.
- Step 2: Second Stage CBT (CBT 2): This is the most important exam. It has two parts. You must score very high marks in Part A to get a government job. At the same time, you must score at least 35% marks in your technical Part B trade test to avoid failing the whole exam.
- Step 3: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): People call this the Psycho Test. You will sit in front of a computer screen and play 5 different visual games. These tests check your memory, your depth perception, and how well you follow directions. You must pass all 5 games individually.
- Step 4: Document Verification (DV): You will visit the railway office to show your original 10th mark sheet, your ITI or Diploma certificates, and your caste papers to prove your identity.
- Step 5: Medical Examination: Railway doctors will check your body. They will test your eyes very strictly to ensure you have 6/6 vision and no color blindness.
6. Previous Year Paper / Exam Level
The CBT 1 exam is easy to moderate. The questions are basic, but you only have 60 minutes for 75 questions, so you must have very fast calculation speed. Many students fail here just because they run out of time.
The CBT 2 exam is very tough. The Basic Science and Engineering section asks deep numerical questions from physics that require heavy thinking.
The trade test (Part B) is especially hard for B.Tech and Diploma students. The exam asks practical questions about workshop tools and machine parts, which ITI students know well but degree students often ignore.
You must solve the previous year papers from the older 2018 ALP exams. It is the only way to understand what kind of engineering drawing questions the railway board likes to ask. Without solving old papers, you will be completely lost in the science section.
7. Cut-Off
The cut-off marks for the ALP exam change a lot depending on which Railway Zone you choose.
For CBT 1, which is just a filtering test, getting a score around 50 to 55 out of 75 is usually safe to reach the next round.
The real fight happens in CBT 2 Part A (out of 100 marks). In highly crowded zones like Allahabad, Patna, or Chandigarh, you need a raw score of 70 to 75 to feel safe. In less crowded zones like Siliguri, a score of 60 to 65 can give you a job.
For CBT 2 Part B, there is no competition cut-off. Every student, regardless of caste or category, just needs a flat 35% marks to pass.
The final merit list is made by taking 70% of your CBT 2 Part A score and adding 30% of your CBAT (Psycho Test) score.
8. Preparation Strategy
To clear the Assistant Loco Pilot exam, you need a very strict 4-month daily routine. Do not try to read everything at once. Divide your time smartly.
- Maths and Reasoning Plan: Spend 2 hours every day on Maths and 1.5 hours on Reasoning. You do not need to read heavy theory books. Just focus on solving maximum questions. Memorize multiplication tables up to 30, square roots, and basic formulas to make your calculation speed very fast. Since CBT 1 gives you less than a minute per question, speed is your biggest weapon in the exam hall.
- Basic Science and Engineering Plan: Give 2 hours every day to this subject because it directly decides your final merit list ranking. Read the chapters on electricity, work, and energy very deeply. Do not just read the theory like a story book; you must solve physics numerical problems daily on paper. Also, spend good time learning the basics of Engineering Drawing, like identifying different drawing lines, geometric figures, and viewing angles.
- Trade Subject Plan: Give 1 hour every single day to read your specific ITI or Diploma trade theory. If you are a mechanical student, read deeply about diesel engines, coolants, and welding types. Many brilliant students score 90 marks in Part A but fail the whole exam because they score less than the passing marks in the Trade Test. Do not ignore your trade book at any cost.
- Psycho Test Plan: Do not waste your time studying for the Psycho Test (CBAT) right now. Start practicing for it only after you finish your CBT 2 exam. You will need to practice it on a computer screen to get used to the fast mouse clicks and visual puzzles.
- Mock Tests and Revision: In the final month before the exam, completely stop reading new books or new topics. You should only solve one full mock test every day on a computer. After finishing the mock test, spend an hour checking your mistakes and revise those specific weak topics.
9. Job Profile (Work)
The job of an Assistant Loco Pilot is full of action and massive responsibility. You will not drive the huge train alone on your first day. Your main job is to assist the senior Loco Pilot.
Before the train starts from the station, your duty is to inspect the huge engine. You have to check the engine oil, coolant levels, test the heavy brakes, and make sure all safety equipment is ready.
While the train is running at a very high speed, you have to stand or sit next to the Loco Pilot. Your most important duty is to constantly watch the railway tracks for signal lights. When you see a signal, you must loudly shout its color (like “Green Signal”) and the Loco Pilot will repeat it back to you. This shouting routine keeps both of you awake and stops deadly accidents.
You also have to watch the engine meter dials to ensure the machine is not overheating. When the train turns on a curved track, you have to look back out of the window to check if all the coaches are safely following the engine. If the engine faces a minor technical problem during the journey, you have to quickly step out and do basic troubleshooting to fix it. Thousands of sleeping passengers trust you with their lives.
10. Vacancy / Notification
The Railway Board released a massive notification for Assistant Loco Pilots under CEN 01/2026. Currently, there are exactly 11,127 vacancies available across various railway zones in India.
The online application window for this new recruitment is officially scheduled to open from 15 May 2026 and will run until 14 June 2026. This huge number of vacancies makes it a golden chance for all ITI, Diploma, and Engineering students to secure a central government job. The railway board has also stated that they will release a new calendar for ALP vacancies every year from now on.
11. Promotion & Growth
The promotion path for an Assistant Loco Pilot is very clear and highly rewarding. You will start your career as an Assistant Loco Pilot. After gaining good driving experience on the tracks, you will be promoted to Senior Assistant Loco Pilot.
Your next big promotion is becoming a full Loco Pilot (Goods), where you will independently drive heavy freight and cargo trains. After driving goods trains for a few years, you get promoted to Loco Pilot (Passenger) to drive local passenger trains.
The final and most respected post is Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), where you drive the fastest premium trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or Vande Bharat Express. If you get tired of driving in your older age, you can easily become a Loco Inspector to check other drivers, or sit in an office as a Power Controller.
12. Posting / Transfer
When you clear the exam, you are assigned to a specific railway division within the zone you applied for. You will get a base station, and all your train journeys will start and end at this base.
Getting a normal transfer back to your home state is very tough because the railway always has a shortage of drivers. An ‘Own Request Transfer’ can easily take 5 to 10 years to pass. The only quick way to go home is a ‘Mutual Transfer’, where you find another Loco Pilot from your home zone who wants to swap places with you.
13. Books & Resources
You do not need an entire library to pass this exam. Keep your book list small and revise them multiple times.
For Mathematics, buy ‘Fast Track Objective Arithmetic’ by Rajesh Verma or ‘Quantitative Aptitude’ by RS Aggarwal. For Reasoning, ‘A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning’ by RS Aggarwal is the best choice.
For the General Science section in CBT 1, ‘Lucent’s General Science’ covers all the basic facts perfectly. For the highly scoring Basic Science and Engineering section in CBT 2, the ‘Platform Series’ books by Rukmini Prakashan are highly trusted by past toppers.
For your specific ITI Trade subject, you must read the trade theory books based on the official NIMI pattern. Most importantly, buy a book of ‘Previous Years Solved Papers’ from Kiran Publication and practice them daily. Solving these old railway questions is the real secret to passing this exam.
14. Work-Life Balance
The work-life balance for an Assistant Loco Pilot is very difficult. Because trains run day and night, you will not have a standard 9-to-5 desk job. You will not get fixed weekends off. Your duties are governed by the HOER rules. If your train duty is scheduled at 2 AM in the freezing winter, you have to wake up and go to the station.
Your sleeping routine will change completely every week. You will often miss festivals and family weddings because you are driving a train in another state. You will sleep in railway ‘Running Rooms’ in different cities before driving another train back home.
15. Pros & Cons
Pros: The best part about this job is the excellent salary. The running allowance can easily double your basic pay, making you earn more than many senior desk officers. It is a highly adventurous job where you travel to new places and control a massive machine. You get high respect in society, free medical care for your family, and free train travel passes. The promotions are also very fast and guaranteed.
Cons: The biggest negative side is the lack of proper sleep and tough duty hours, which can affect your physical health over the years. The medical rules are extremely harsh; if your eyesight becomes weak at any point in your career, you will be permanently removed from driving duties. The job also has massive mental pressure because one small mistake can cost thousands of lives.
