Railway Assistant Pointsman Syllabus

General Intelligence and Reasoning
This section has 30 questions. It checks your common sense and logic .
- Analogies and Series: You have to look at a pattern of numbers or letters and guess what comes next.
- Coding and Decoding: Finding the hidden rule used to write a secret code word.
- Blood Relations: Solving puzzles about family trees, like how a man is related to a woman in a picture.
- Syllogism: You will get statements like “Some cars are buses” and you have to decide if the conclusion matches the statement.
- Venn Diagram: Solving group problems using overlapping circles.
- Directions: Tracing the path of a person walking North, South, East, or West.
- Similarities and Differences: Spotting the odd image or word out of four options.
General Science
This section has 25 questions. It is completely based on the CBSE 10th standard science books .
- Physics: You need to study motion, work, energy, power, gravity, sound waves, light reflection, and basic electricity rules.
- Chemistry: The questions focus on basic chemical reactions, acids, bases, salts, the periodic table, and properties of metals.
- Biology: This is the most important part. You have to learn about human body systems, cell structure, plant life, and common diseases.
General Awareness and Current Affairs
This section has 20 questions.
- Current Affairs: You need to know the latest news from the last six months.
- Sports and Culture: Knowing the winners of recent sports cups and famous Indian festivals.
- Economics and Politics: Basic knowledge of the Indian government system and the economy.
- Science and Technology: Recent space missions and technical achievements.
2. Exam Pattern
To become an Assistant Pointsman, you must pass the Computer Based Test (CBT). The exam pattern is very straightforward. The total exam carries 100 marks, and you have to solve 100 multiple-choice questions . This means each correct answer gives you 1 full mark .
You get exactly 90 minutes to complete the test . You must not guess blindly because there is a negative marking rule. For every wrong answer, the railway board will cut 1/3 of a mark from your total score .

3. Eligibility
The minimum educational qualification to apply for the Assistant Pointsman post is a 10th class pass (Matriculation) from any recognized board in India. An ITI certificate is also accepted, but a simple 10th pass is fully enough to apply for this specific role .
The base age limit set by the railway is 18 to 33 years. But, due to the delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the upper age limit was relaxed by 3 years, making it 18 to 36 years for general category students. OBC candidates get an extra 3 years, and SC/ST candidates get an extra 5 years of relaxation .
The most critical eligibility rule for an Assistant Pointsman is the medical standard. You must strictly pass the A2 Medical Standard . Because a Pointsman has to show flags to train drivers and manage track switches, you must have perfect 6/9 distant vision without wearing glasses . If you have color blindness or weak eyesight, you will be rejected for this post.
4. Salary
An Assistant Pointsman gets a very good starting salary. The post comes under Pay Level 1 of the 7th Pay Commission. Your basic pay will be exactly Rs. 18,000 per month.
However, the railway gives many extra allowances that increase your final salary. The biggest addition is the Dearness Allowance (DA), which is now 60% of your basic pay . You will also receive a House Rent Allowance (HRA), which can be 8%, 16%, or 24% depending on how big your posting city is .
Because trains run day and night, an Assistant Pointsman has to do many night shifts. For this, you get a special Night Duty Allowance. You also get a Transport Allowance to cover travel costs. After adding all these benefits and removing the standard pension deductions, your final in-hand salary every month will be around Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 28,000.
5. Selection Process
The journey to becoming an Assistant Pointsman involves four clear steps. You must pass one step to reach the next.
- Step 1: Computer Based Test (CBT): First, you have to pass the 90-minute online written exam covering math, science, and reasoning .
- Step 2: Physical Efficiency Test (PET): If you pass the written exam, you must prove your physical fitness. Male candidates have to lift a 35 kg weight and walk 100 meters in 2 minutes
. Then, they must run 1 kilometer in 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Female candidates must lift 20 kg for 100 meters and run 1 kilometer in 5 minutes and 40 seconds . - Step 3: Document Verification (DV): You have to show your original 10th class mark sheet, Aadhaar card, and caste certificates to the railway officers to prove you are a genuine candidate.
- Step 4: Medical Examination: This is the strictest step for a Pointsman. Railway doctors will do a full eye checkup to ensure you meet the A2 medical standard. They will check for color blindness, night vision, and distance vision .
6. Previous Year Paper / Exam Level
The exam level is strictly based on the 10th class syllabus . The math questions are not very deep, but they test your calculation speed. The science questions come directly from the basic NCERT books of the 9th and 10th classes.
When you look at the previous year’s papers, you will notice that the railway board asks very straightforward questions. The reasoning section is usually very easy and fast to solve “. 7. Cut-Off
The cut-off marks for the RRB Group D exam are different for every railway zone. Zones like Allahabad and Chandigarh always have a very high cut-off because too many students apply there.
To feel completely safe and ensure you get your name on the final merit list for the Assistant Pointsman post, you should target a raw score of 70 to 75 marks out of 100. Even though the official rule says general category students only need 40% marks to pass, the actual cut-off goes much higher due to normalization and high competition.

To clear this exam, you need a solid 4-month daily study routine.
- Mathematics Plan: Spend your first month memorizing multiplication tables, square roots, and basic formulas. This will make your math calculations very fast. Give at least 2 hours every day to solve math problems .
- Reasoning Plan: Give 1.5 hours daily to reasoning . Solve puzzles, blood relation questions, and coding-decoding problems. This is the easiest subject to score full marks if you practice daily.
- Science Plan: Give 2 hours daily to read the 9th and 10th class NCERT science books
. Read the biology section very carefully because it carries the most weightage. Make small notes of important chemical formulas and physics rules. - Current Affairs Plan: Read a current affairs magazine for 30 minutes every morning
. Focus only on the major events, sports cups, and new railway news from the last 6 months.
In the final month, stop reading new topics. Just solve one full mock test every day and analyze your mistakes. Also, start doing light running every morning so you do not fail the physical test later.
9. Job Profile (Work)
The job of an Assistant Pointsman is very important and highly respected at the railway station. Unlike a Trackman who works far away in the jungles or open lines, a Pointsman works directly inside the station limits or the station yard.
Your main duty is to operate the track switches (called points) to make sure a train changes its track safely . You will also be responsible for coupling and uncoupling the train coaches (joining or removing train bogies) . When a train passes through the station, you have to stand at the platform and show a green or red flag to the train driver and the guard to exchange the “all-right” signal. In case of an emergency or fog, you have to place detonators on the track to warn upcoming trains. It is a job of high responsibility because thousands of lives depend on your correct signals.
10. Vacancy / Notification
The railway board has issued a large notification named CEN 09/2025. In this notice, they announced a total of 22,195 Group D vacancies across India . Out of these total posts, there are exactly 5,000 vacancies specifically reserved for the Pointsman-B (Assistant Pointsman) role.
The online application process started on January 31, 2026, and the final date to submit the form was March 9, 2026 “. The computer-based written exam for this new recruitment cycle is tentatively planned to be held in May 2026.
11. Promotion & Growth
The promotion path for an Assistant Pointsman is one of the best among all Group D jobs . Because you work closely with the station operations, your natural promotion is very fast.
After a few years of service, an Assistant Pointsman is promoted to a Senior Pointsman . The biggest advantage is that you can give internal railway exams like the General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE) or the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) . By passing these internal exams, a Pointsman can directly become a Station Master, a Goods Guard (Train Manager), or a Ticket Collector (TC). Many Pointsmen become Station Masters within 5 to 7 years of joining by passing these internal tests.
12. Posting / Transfer
When you join as an Assistant Pointsman, you will be posted at a specific railway station within your allotted Railway Zone. Getting a normal transfer to your home state is a very long process that takes many years.
If you want to go back to your home state quickly, you can use the “Mutual Transfer” rule . In this rule, you have to find another Assistant Pointsman who is working in your home state but wants to come to your current state. If you both agree, the railway board will swap your positions easily .

The work-life balance for an Assistant Pointsman involves shift duties. Railway stations operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Therefore, your duty will be divided into shifts, usually 8 hours long (Morning, Evening, and Night shifts) “. At smaller stations with fewer trains, the shift might be 12 hours long.
Because the shifts rotate every week, your sleeping pattern will change often. You will have to do compulsory night duties. However, when your shift ends, you are completely free to go home and relax. You do not carry any office work home.
